His Sunday must-watch

Tonight marks the beginning of the end for one of my favorites, Desperate Housewives (9/8c on ABC). It’s sad to see the show come to an end but they started running out of storylines a couple of years ago. Hopefully there are a few juicy twists left on Wisteria Lane.

I thought Desperate would be my clear must-watch, but honestly, what I’m looking forward to the most tonight is the premiere of Pan Am (10/9c on ABC). Part of me is just really excited that Brothers & Sisters isn’t on anymore. Another part of me wishes I could have lived in the 60s and flown on old school Pan Am.

Back then flying was considered an “adventure”. And no, not because of the hassle of security lines, bag searches, extra bag fees and arriving 2 hours early only to have your flight delayed. It was an adventure because it was considered an experience – you’ve all seen the old school Southwest or Pan Am ads. Travel just isn’t like that anymore, and this show promises to bring a glimpse into that adventure back to us.

On top of all that it’s got a relatively young, nondescript cast of up-and-comers like Mike Vogel (from The Help), who plays captain Dean Lowrey and Australian soap star Margot Robbie who plays Laura Cameron, the youngest addition to the Pan Am crew. Mix that in with a little random Christina Ricci resurgence and you have an exciting new premiere! I think it’s worth a look.

  1. Pan Am was definitely on my list of shows to watch Sunday night, as it was for many viewers based on its solid ratings (an estimated 10.9 million tuned in according to Watch With Kristin). But was it worth my precious DVR space?

Too soon to tell. I mean it was fine, but fine is not what I expect from an anticipated new show. I did find myself interested in the U.S. intelligence work Kate was asked to perform, as well as the dynamic between her and sister/runaway bride Laura. I really felt for Colette, who realized a passenger she connected with (in more ways than one) on a previous flight was married with a child. And I enjoyed watching the love story of Dean and Bridget unfold through flashbacks. I’m hoping Bridget isn’t out of the show completely now that she’s passed on her spy role to Kate.

Ironically it was Maggie, played by the one known name in this series (Christina Ricci), who seemed the most out of place and whom I felt the least connection with. That last scene with all the stewardesses walking on the plane? One of those ladies is not like the other! Maybe that's intentional, and we'll grow to appreciate the uniqueness of her character. I'll give her and the show the benefit of the doubt. Afterall, I do have an hour to fill now that Brothers & Sisters is gone. Goodbye, dear Walker family. You are missed, even if not by Him.
